Family Mediation at Garden Court Chambers offers parties who have agreed to mediate an alternative to adversarial, costly and stressful family law court proceedings where there is a need to resolve any kind of family dispute. The disputes which are mediated cover a wide range of topics including:
- How to end a relationship
- Relationships between family members.
- Vulnerable adults
Mediation can take place whether or not there are already court proceedings and whether or not the parties have instructed lawyers, provided the parties agree to mediate.
Family and other personal relationships are at the heart of most people’s lives and when they go wrong can lead to extraordinarily difficult and painful situations. It is increasingly recognised that litigating family disputes in court is not the best or most cost effective way to deal with them and courts are increasingly referring parties to mediation.
The essence of Family Mediation is that it is entered into and participated in by agreement. It is confidential to the parties and the mediator and is usually conducted without lawyers being present. Every mediation is different and personal to those involved but will usually involve at least 2 sessions. Our mediators are experienced lawyers with expertise in the area of law involved and who are impartial and independent. The mediator assists the parties define their own issues and reach their own agreement about them in a constructive and non-confrontational way.
Parties can contact Lavinia Shaw-Brown at Garden Court Mediation themselves or through their lawyers. We will be happy to discuss the issue for possible mediation, give an indication of the cost of the first meeting and arrange for a mediator to contact the parties to make arrangements. Appointments can be made at short notice and at flexible times.
Please note, our mediators currently do not offer MIAMs.
